3. Lacquer Cabinet
Japan. Circa 1700.
27 1/2 x 21 x 16 1/2'' (70 x 53 x 42cm)

A fine export lacquer cabinet
decorated overall in gold takamaki -
e, hiramaki - e and nashiji, on black
ground. The doors decorated with
exotic pavilions amidst rocky outcrops
and a pair of golden pheasant poised
on the shoreline. The side panels &
top, lacquered with ancient gnarled
pine trees growing from rocky banks.
Two doors open to reveal eight
drawers, all with similar themed
decorated views.

The chest's gilt copper mounts with
etched foliate designs.

Such chests were produced in Japan and
exported to the aristocratic houses of
17th/18th century England.
